Medication administration errors are a major concern in surgical wards, leading to adverse drug reactions, prolonged recovery, and increased healthcare costs. Nurses are responsible for ensuring the correct dosage, timing, and route of medication administration, following established protocols to minimize errors (Ezenwa et al., 2024).
Kano State hospitals, as major healthcare providers, serve a high volume of surgical patients who require post-operative medication management. However, studies suggest that deviations from medication administration protocols remain a persistent issue due to factors such as workload, inadequate training, and poor documentation practices (Muhammad & Idris, 2023).
This study aims to assess the adherence of nurses to medication administration protocols in general surgical wards of Kano State hospitals, identifying gaps and recommending improvements.
Errors in medication administration can compromise patient safety and surgical recovery. In Kano State hospitals, variations in nurses’ adherence to standard protocols have raised concerns about patient care quality (Aliyu & Garba, 2024).
Given the critical role of medication in post-surgical treatment, this study seeks to evaluate nurses’ compliance with administration guidelines, highlighting challenges and solutions.
